Bayern Munich’s elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain was undoubtedly a disappointment, but according to sporting director Christoph Freund, it is not going to trigger a dramatic overhaul of the squad.

As transfer rumors continue to swirl (especially around Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown) and supporters debate what changes are needed to take the next step in Europe, Freund made it clear that Bayern Munich’s leadership remains committed to the long-term vision that guided the club throughout the season.

“We’ll see, not everything has been finalized and discussed. But we want to maintain our basic principle that we took this season, it’s that our squad shouldn’t be too big. We want to keep that. We have a very good squad. It’s just about making the right decisions,” Freund said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’re always discussing improvements and what else can help the team. It’s a very complex topic and has nothing to do with just one game. We’ll get together again to discuss how we can become even better. We’re very happy with the squad we have, but of course, we want to improve in the details.”

That approach makes sense given the progress Bayern Munich made under Vincent Kompany. The team reclaimed the Bundesliga title, played some of the most attractive football in Europe, and came within touching distance of another Champions League semifinal appearance.

The coming transfer window will still bring additions and departures, but Freund’s message is clear: Bayern Munich believes its foundation is already in place. The challenge now is identifying the small improvements that can turn a very good team into a champion on every front.
