Nets projected to decline Josh Minott's $2.6 million team option

The Brooklyn Nets will have some important decisions to make this offseason as they seek to improve from a 2025-26 NBA season in which they finished with a lowly 20-62 record. Brooklyn not only has to decide who they will be taking with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, but they also have to make decisions on potential free-agents like forward Josh Minott.

"Minott still has rotation potential. For the Nets, who are likely to have a lot of cap space, it doesn’t make sense to keep Minott on this deal. This option will be declined, but Brooklyn could re-sign Minott later," Keith Smith wrote on Minott for Spotrac. Smith was projecting how the Nets would approach each of the four players that have team options that includes Minott, center Day'Ron Sharpe, guard Malachi Smith, and forward Ziaire Williams.

Minott, 23, is coming off the best stretch of basketball in his four-year career after coming into the league as the 45th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Memphis. In his 16 games that he played for the Nets following the February deadline, Minott averaged 10.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 49.1% from the field and 39.5% from behind the three-point line.

Minott was one of the players that general manager Sean Marks and head coach Jordi Fernandez took a chance on to see how he would do in an expanded role compared to what he was doing for the Boston Celtics. Minott not only displayed his ability to score and defend at a high level during his minutes, but he also brought some athleticism to the lineup.

As Smith mentioned, Brooklyn will likely try to maximize as much cap space as possible this offseason so that they can sign whoever they need to sign in free-agency or have enough money to conduct certain trades. Given how well Minott played during his limited time on the roster, the Nets will likely bring him back to Brooklyn, but it will probably take some time with him being on the open market.
