The Philadelphia Phillies fired Rob Thomson on Tuesday, and reportedly offered the job to Alex Cora before naming Don Mattingly interim manager.

"Alex Cora was offered the Philadelphia Phillies' managerial job before Don Mattingly, but declined," wrote USA Today's Bob Nightengale on X. "He has decided to spend time with his family."
Understandably, Cora turned down the Phillies job to spend time with his family after being fired by the Red Sox. However, he will remain in play for the long-term managerial job in Philadelphia. His relationship with Dave Dombrowski will make him the top candidate for the position in the offseason.
However, Mattingly is a seasoned manager who has won Manager of the Year. He could end up as the long-term manager if he can get the Phillies' season turned around.
Whether it's the Phillies or not, Cora figures to have no trouble landing a new job next season. He is regarded as one of the better managers in baseball, and the Red Sox's players sure seemed to respect him. However, Craig Breslow and company felt it was time for a change after a subpar start to the season.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the timing was not right to hire Cora. However, the timing could be better in the offseason, which would give Cora a fresh start, as opposed to taking over a flawed team a month into the season.
"As part of the Phillies' process, they have done their background work on Alex Cora and his availability to manage -- but now is not the right time, fresh off his firing by the Red Sox," Olney wrote on X.
