The New York Yankees were one of the quieter teams this offseason, to many people’s surprise. However, they still will be contenders this year, and will probably make use of the trade deadline in August.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller believes so as well, and predicts the Yankees will land All-Star shortstop C.J. Abrams to replace Anthony Volpe in his do-or-die season.

“Short of knowing what injury news will look like in early August, though, the Yankees may make the most sense here. Primary 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. has plans of joining the 50/50 club, but he is often injured, and it's his final season before free agency. Primary SS Anthony Volpe is recovering from labrum surgery and is probably entering a make-or-break year after three straight seasons with an OPS of around .660. Even with top prospect George Lombard Jr. possibly ready to make his MLB debut at some point this season, the Bronx Bombers might be on the hunt for some middle infield help this summer,” Miller wrote.

This past season, Abrams slashed .257/.315/.433/.748 with 35 doubles, 19 home runs, 60 RBI, and 31 stolen bases in 144 games played. He’s an overall better hitter than Volpe, and as a lefty playing half his games in Yankee Stadium, his number of deep balls could soar.

He’s also cheap. Abrams is set to make $4.2 million this season, and still has two years of control on his contract, so the Yanks have time to see what he’s capable of if they want to extend him.

If the Yanks are done with Volpe, this is the move to make. Hopefully, they do it sooner than later, as another contender needing a shortstop will probably be just as interested.
