Palace City Legion's Dakota Classic run ends with pair of losses

Jun. 14—BRANDON, S.D. — After splitting its first two pool play games on Friday at the Dakota Classic, Palace City Post 18 lost one game each on Saturday and Sunday, ending its tournament run at Aspen Park.

In the first game on Saturday, Elkhorn North Equitable Bank (Neb.) raced past Post 18 in five innings, 10-0. Elkhorn North held Palace City to just one hit for the game, as Kaiden Allen earned the lone hit, while Elkhorn recorded nine hits of its own in the win.

Jacob Ebert from the Post 18 Junior team pitched for PCB Legion, as he surrendered 10 runs on nine hits with one strikeout through 2 2/3 innings pitched. Tyler Christensen came in relief, pitching 1 1/3 innings with zero runs and zero hits allowed plus two strikeouts.

Colin Acker and Carson Driever each led the way for Elkhorn North at the plate with two hits apiece, while Driever and Ethan Asmus paced the team in RBIs with three apiece.

In Game 2 on Saturday, Post 18 had trouble keeping up with Brandon Valley Post 131 in a 13-2 loss in five innings.

PCB was held to just one hit for the second game in a row, as Jaxson Hartman delivered a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning, scoring Carter McCormick. From there, Brandon Valley tacked on 13 unanswered runs to seal the 11-run win.

Quinton Wilson, Canon Moller, Allen and Hartman each made an appearance on the mound for the Palace City pitching staff, who allowed nine earned runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts combined between the four pitchers in four innings.

Grady Gindorff led Brandon Valley at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Jack Blomgren added two hits and Bryce Plucker tallied three RBIs. Matthew Henkelman earned the win on the mound for Brandon Valley, pitching three innings with two runs allowed on one hit plus five strikeouts.

Palace City Post 18 Legion (7-7) hosts the Helena Senators, of Montana, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
