Justin Trudeau says his allegiance is to Canada despite opting to watch Team USA at Friday’s opening of the FIFA World Cup.
Reposting a link to a New York Times story that noted how the former prime minister chose to attend the U.S. game, Trudeau fired back at critics by sharing a Canadian flag emoji and insisting he was there to support Perry, who helped open the World Cup festivities Friday in Los Angeles.
“Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” Trudeau responded on X.
Most Canadians weren’t buying his response, though, reminding Trudeau that he had urged Canadians to skip visits to the U.S. in the wake of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
“ The guy who says don’t go to the U.S. is now literally living in the U.S. Politicians are the worst,” one critic wrote, with another suggesting, “As supportive elbower who promised to always stand by Canadians, I would have expected you to have Katy open for Canada, and be supportive here instead.”
Katy and Justin got cozy after her opening ceremony performance
Trudeau found himself being ridiculed on social media after he was spotted cheering on the U.S. Men’s National Team as they took on Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday, instead of attending Team Canada’s opening game from Toronto Stadium.
Fox Sports shared video of Trudeau and Perry, who made their red carpet debut last week in New York City , holding hands and cozying up to one another as they watched the match from a private box.
“S o much for boycotting travel to the U.S. hahaha elbows up ,” one person swiped .
One viral clip showed Trudeau smiling and clapping after the U.S. scored a goal.
“Canada finally gets to host a World Cup match on home soil, but where was ex-PM Justin Trudeau? At the USA game,” one critic swiped. “Not only did he skip his own country’s historic moment, he was caught on TV cheering for an American goal.”

At the USA 🇺🇸 game.
Not only did he skip his own country's historic moment, he was caught on TV cheering for an American goal. 🤦🏻

Conservative content creator Mario Zelaya pointed out the irony of Trudeau, who last year said “Canadians are angry” in the wake of President Donald Trump’s punishing tariffs, attending the game as current Prime Minister Mark Carney was also away in Europe.
“ The previous PM is in America, cheering on America, with his American girlfriend, drinking from a plastic straw,” Zelaya said. “While the current PM, just landed in Europe, & said ‘it’s good to be home,’ while nearly all his assets & family are in America.”
“You really can’t make this stuff up,” real estate commentator Shazi Goalie wrote on X in a post that was viewed more than 1.4 million times.
Political commentator Ryan Gerritsen shared the video of Trudeau clapping and added a speech the former PM gave in March 2025 when he accused Trump of starting a trade war.
“Canadians are hurt. Canadians are angry. We are going to choose to not go on vacation in Florida,” Trudeau said at the time. “We are going to choose to try and buy Canadian products … and yeah we’re probably going to keep booing the American anthem.”
Trudeau decided to go to the U.S. World Cup opener game instead of Canada’s.

Earlier in the evening, Perry helped kick off the World Cup festivities when she performed Wonder off her her 2024 143 album. After her performance, Hello!captured video of her running into the arms of Trudeau as he waited just off the field, where they embraced one another.
Last week, the pair attended the Tribeca Festival screening of a new concert documentary that captured Perry’s Lifetimes Tour.
During a Q&A afterwards, Perry called Trudeau the “ love of my life .”
His appearance in New York also rubbed many Canadians the wrong way.
“ He ran Canada into a recession and left Carney to finish the job,” one X user remarked, referencing news that the country is now in a technical recession. “Now he’s photobombing Katy Perry at Tribeca.”
The two have reportedly become “very serious” about one another. Earlier this month, Us Weekly reported that Trudeau wants his pop star girlfriend to spend “part of the year” living in Montreal with him.
“Justin is showing Katy his new home, where he wants her to live part of the year with him,” a source told the outlet.
One confidante told the magazine that the couple are also “integrating their lives more and more,” with Perry introducing her 5-year-old daughter, Daisy, to Trudeau’s children – Xavier, 18, and Hadrien, 12, and Ella-Grace, 17.
“Their relationship has deepened over the past several months, and they are about to celebrate their one-year anniversary,” the insider shared. “They both feel it’s important to blend their families thoughtfully and at a comfortable pace.”
