A former product of the Ontario Junior Hockey League was convicted of some truly heinous charges this week and learned that he will now spend the next several years of his life behind bars.
According to a report from TSN's Rick Westhead, former OJHL and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League defenseman Dale Deon was sentenced to spend the next 7.5 years behind bars after he admitted to not only possessing child sexual abuse material but also sharing that material with others.
"Was like watching a car accident. It's hard to look away," said the 33 year old who admitted that the behavior began all the way back in his 20s.
Deon played for the Brampton Capitals and Milton Icehawks during his tenure in the OJHL and the Shawinigan Cataractes and the Rimouski Oceanic during his time in the QMJHL.
Although he never managed to crack the big leagues, Deon continued to play professional hockey in various smaller leagues right up until the 2024-25 season. In fact during the 2021-22 season Deon would capture the President's Cup, the SPHL's championship title. Of course none of the accolades he achieved in hockey will matter at all now with Deon being tarnished with the worst possible stain that can be placed on another human being.
Forensic examination revealed that investigators found as many as 26,000 images and 3,000 videos, suggesting that Deon had been extremely prolific when it comes to obtaining the material. The material was also described as being the most severe on a scale used to classify child sexual abuse materials, a deeply disturbing revelation.
There is currently another complaint against Deon as well with the court who sentenced him determining that the second complaint "falls outside the jurisdiction of this court and remains unadjudicated" which means that Deon may be facing even more legal trouble.
Given the serious nature of the charges he has already been convicted of, I can only hope that Deon spends a very long time behind bars.
