Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau made important strides in their relationship this week when the pop star explained — in detail — the two sides of her fan base.
“Do you know the difference between a cat and a rat? Katycat and a Katyrat,” Perry began a video shared to her Instagram. Puzzled, Trudeau replied, “Why don’t you tell me?”
“You know how the light cannot exist without the darkness? And that we should just embrace our shadow self?” Perry said as the two made their way to the premiere of her concert doc at the Tribeca Festival . “The Katyrats are a little bit more mischievous than the cats. But that’s because they have a good relationship with all parts of themselves, whether that is the nice or the naughty.”
Katycats is an endearing term Perry uses to characterize her most devoted fans. Katyrats, on the other hand, is a moniker used to describe her fiercest critics.
“So, now that I’m a Katycat, should I aspire to be a Katyrat?” Trudeau asked with a straight face.
“Um, maybe actually. Everyone has a little rat inside of them. If you think you have no rat, then you actually are not even a Katycat. So you have to kind of accept the rat to be the cat,” Perry concluded.
The clip racked up more than 1.3 million views on X, with users captioning the video: “K aty Perry educating Justin Trudeau about her fandom is taking me out.”

On social media, there were plenty more rats than cats as commentary on the video ranged from calling the couple “cringe” to attacks on Trudeau’s reign as prime minister, saying he “ruined Canada.”
“Fun fact: he imposed the Emergencies Act on an entire nation, brutalized thousands, froze their accounts, hired police in green suits and had the RCMP trample little ladies to the ground,” one critic seethed. “The judiciary told him that all of it was illegal. Now he’s having cat-rat conversations.”
“H ow much did Trudeau and Perry pay to have social media assault us all with their ‘love story’?” another detractor asked.
“ My yearly quota has been reached – I have seen enough of TRUDEAU and it’s only June……” a third person wrote.
After watching, one commentator asked how Trudeau managed to stay in power for a decade before he exited politics amid record-low support in early 2025.
“Canadians voted to keep this guy in power for 10 YEARS! What does that say about Liberal Canadians?” they wondered.
Perry calls Trudeau the ‘love of my life’
Perry’s viral Katycat/Katyrat breakdown was followed by the couple’s red carpet appearance in New York City at the Tribeca Festival for the premiere of the pop star’s new music documentary, Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris , a concert film that captures her most recent worldwide trek.
Clad in a black suit and white shirt, Trudeau went unrecognized by most onlookers as Perry, in a full-length white gown, signed autographs for fans. At one point, as they posed for photographers, Trudeau playfully rubbed Perry’s behind , which enraged some people on social media.

“W hat a classless pig!” one person declared, with another branding Trudeau a “creepy old geezer.”
“Is it just me or anyone else also feels the butt-touching is a bit uncomfortable to watch,” a third person asked.
“ Gross and degrading to cup her ass,” a fourth critic wrote. “This is not a relationship. It is a display.”
One video dubbed Trudeau “an absolute nobody” as he stood idly by as Perry signed autographs for her fans.

Desperate for attention, one photographer caught Perry taking a pic of Trudeau on the red carpet so he could seem at least a little bit like a celebrity.
During a post-screening Q&A, Perry spoke about her personal journey in 2025, which saw her split from longtime fiancé Orlando Bloom before she started dating Trudeau.
Perry said the Paris concert was filmed “after I met the love of my life.”
“So I felt very anchored by that,” Perry said. “I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite — I fly super high. Sometimes I need to be anchored, so to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now … I would say now at the end of 91 shows, I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life. I am very in love.”
