City of Tshwane moves to rename historic airport

The City of Tshwane council has plans to rename Wonderboom National Airport.

The airport, located north of Pretoria, was established in 1937. Its name stems from the Wonderboom, a 1 000-year-old wild fig tree found on the Wonderboom Nature Reserve. The tree itself received its name from Hendrik Potgieter, a politician and Voortrekker leader, in 1836.

Now, the City of Tshwane, which currently serves as the airport’s licence holder, is looking to change the airport’s name. Here’s why…

NAME CHANGE TO HONOUR NDEBELE ROOTS

According to Sarah Mabotsa, the Tshwane MMC for economic development and spatial planning, Wonderboom Airport’s new name would reflect Ndebele heritage. Specifically, it would honour the original Ndebele landowners of the area where the airport is located.

The proposal to change its name was first submitted in April 2018 by Jan Mthimkhulu Mahlangu. It was then resubmitted in 2024.

“Proposed names submitted as part of the application seek to reflect this historical and cultural significance,” explained Mabotsa, per The Citizen.

“In terms of the city’s geographical names policy, renaming may be considered for purposes that include honouring or commemorating noteworthy individuals associated with the city, province or country; commemorating places, events and memories of cultural or historical significance; and strengthening local heritage and promoting the character and identity of an area.”

The City of Tshwane council has officially enacted a public participation process. During this period, stakeholders and members of the public can share their thoughts, comments and remarks on the renaming proposal. Further details regarding this process are expected to be announced in the near future.

SHOULD WONDERBOOM AIRPORT RETAIN ITS NAME?

As of writing, over 1 500 names across South Africa have been changed. These include cities, streets and geographic landmarks.

Most recently, the City of Johannesburg announced its plans to rename four streets in its CBD in tribute to the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

However, the topic – and implementation – of name changes has become something of a contentious issue among South Africans. Many believe that the practice of renaming is beneficial, especially in terms of recognising our country’s key figures and diverse cultures while also distancing ourselves from SA’s dark past.

On the other side of the coin, however, critics are scathing of the practice. The biggest fear is that it can severely impact South Africa’s economy. In turn, it could cause a knock-on effect on local communities.
