The Boston Red Sox entered play on Friday just 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the American League.

Despite how the Red Sox have played so far, they are still very much in the race. They do need to start playing better and get healthier, but they should not punt the season. It would make sense for the Red Sox to be cautious buyers at the trade deadline, and adding a starting pitcher may be wise.

Garrett Crochet is currently injured and Brayan Bello has been sent to Triple-A amid his woes. Ranger Suarez, Connelly Early, Payton Tolle and Sonny Gray have been solid, but the Red Sox may need another reliable arm to really make a push. They are another injury away from being in serious trouble.

The Red Sox have already signed Bello to an extension and Suarez is signed to a deal through 2030. They should be looking at rental options, and Freddy Peralta of the New York Mets would make sense.

Peralta will be a free agent after the season, and the New York Mets look to be heading toward being sellers. Peralta has a 3.63 ERA and could slot into the rotation as one of the better arms. It would allow the Red Sox to keep Bello in Triple-A and work through his issues with no rush.

It could create a situation where the Red Sox have six reliable starters and have to go to a six-man rotation, however.
