The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a pivotal offseason, as the hope is that Luka Doncic will have a ton of talent around him.

There are a ton of players that could potentially be available on the trade and free-agency market for the Lakers to pursue, but one player in particular has gotten a lot of love from Lakers fans.

Trey Murphy, an elite wing for the New Orleans Pelicans, would be the perfect type of fit in Los Angeles. Even if LeBron James returns or not, Murphy has the ability to guard multiple positions and knock down shots at a very high level.

However, one writer believes that the latest report on Murphy is unfortunate news for the Lakers in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.

“Just want to make sure I'm on record saying any talk of trading Trey Murphy is absolute insanity,” Will Guillory of The Athletic wrote.

“Murphy III has been a consistently well-regarded target for the Lakers, as the franchise's interest in him was widely recognized throughout the 2025-26 NBA season… Lacking enough assets to fully satisfy and convince the Pelicans to pull the trigger, it appears that the Lakers need to consider outside wing options beyond Murphy III,” Basketnews wrote.

I don't think the Lakers lack assets to get a player of Murphy's caliber, but the question is probably whether they're willing to move nearly all of their assets to land one. That's the one unfortunate reality the Lakers will have to deal with this offseason.
