But fans will agree that Senne Lammens’ arrival on deadline day was as big a reason given the impact the Belgian ended up having.
Prior to the 23-year-old’s signing, both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir were struggling in goal, and were consistently producing errors in big moments.
What a debut season Senne Lammens enjoyed
INEOS were forced to act, and in came the Belgian international for an initial £18.2 million.
Several pundits raised doubts about whether such an inexperienced shot-stopper would succeed under the harsh glare of the Old Trafford lights.
But Senne Lammens proved to be an inspired signing, keeping eight clean sheets and making 79 saves. He ended up preventing more goals than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League this past season.
Not only his saves, but the 6ft 3 in goalie radiated calmness when put under pressure inside the box.
Senne Lammens picks up PL award
He was commanding inside his area and hardly made any major mistakes despite the aerial and physical barrage from set-pieces.
The United No. 31 was rightly nominated for the Premier League Transfer of the Season award alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United), Rayan Cherki (Man City), Viktor Gyokeres (Arsenal), Joao Pedro (Chelsea), Antoine Semenyo (Man City), Adrien Truffert (AFC Bournemouth) and Granit Xhaka (Sunderland).
And as revealed by the official Premier League website, the United ace claimed the top honours after bagging the most votes from supporters.
Senne Lammens will now look to enjoy a productive World Cup before returning to United as Carrick’s team aim to compete on four fronts next season.
The goalie has already outlined his desire to keep improving, but INEOS will need to bring in proper backup now that both Onana and Bayindir are set to depart.
