Semifinal set at North Dakota state singles, doubles tournaments

May 29—GRAND FORKS — West Fargo Sheyenne's Sarea Gu is the defending North Dakota state girls singles champion.

Valley City sisters Kailee and Skye Nielsen are the defending state doubles champions.

They all looked like it Friday at Choice Health and Fitness.

Gu easily cruised to the singles semifinals, winning a pair of matches in straight sets. She beat Minot North's Addison Clark 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, then topped Bismarck Century's Jenny Pitcher 6-3, 6-1 in the second.

Gu was the lone East Region singles player to reach the semifinals.

She's joined by the West Region's top three seeds — No. 1 Kyllie Fettig of Minot, No. 2 Avy Ator of Williston and No. 3 Shayna Klitzke of Williston.

Gu and Ator play in one semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday. Klitzke plays Fettig in the other semifinal.

The championship will follow.

In doubles, Nielsen and Nielsen also easily advanced to the semifinals, winning a pair of matches in straight sets.

They are also the lone East Region team to reach the semifinals.

They're joined by the West Region's top three seeds — No. 1 Ava Thuner and Grace Olson of Minot, No. 2 Ava Dunlop and Sophia Edlund of Bismarck Century and No. 3 Anna Hronová and Elise Roberts of Jamestown.

Grand Forks has two hopes left for state placers.

Red River's Irene Tang, the East Region's No. 8 seed, is in the consolation singles semifinals after winning a pair of consolation matches.

Red River's Ruby Schneider and Kalli Block, the East Region's No. 2 seed, are in the doubles consolation semifinals. Schneider and Block were knocked off by Hronová and Roberts.
