World Cup winner Lukas Podolski calls time on professional career aged 40

One of Germany's 2014 World Cup winners Lukas Podolski is ending his professional football career, Sky Germany has confirmed.

"A chapter ends, a new era begins," wrote Podolski, who has been under contract with Górnik Zabrze in Poland since 2021.

His final club match is scheduled for 17:30 CET this afternoon with a home fixture against Radomiak Radom in the Ekstraklasa.

The attacking player can look back on a very successful career at both club and international level over the last 23 years in total.

Podolski won the 2014 World Cup with Germany and three years later, after 130 games and 49 goals, he ended his international career.

The 40-year-old firat broke through and trained in the youth academy of 1.FC Köln before making his professional debut in 2003.

He eventually made another move within the Bundesliga to join FC Bayern Munich, with whom he won the double in 2008.

Abroad, Podolski starred for Arsenal, Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Vissel Kobe in Japan and Antalyaspor, before ending his career in Poland.
