Wednesday saw another down-to-the-wire contest between Grantsville and Carbon after the Dinos dominated Logan in the one-loss bracket with a 26-13 victory to force another showdown against the Cowboys.

Once again, Carbon held a four-run lead over the Cowboys, but couldn’t hold on as Grantsville put together another big rally for a thrilling 10-6 come-from-behind victory to advance to the 3A championship game against Union.

“I’m grateful for the win, but I’d appreciate not having to come from behind next time,” said Grantsville head coach Trevor Thornton with a smile. “That was another barn burner — and give Carbon a lot of credit. They have a great team and can really hit the ball. We knew we had to play our best and I’m super proud of our guys for being resilient and digging down deep again and making big plays to win the game.”

Grantsville got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first and looked to avoid needing a comeback win as Jordan Fawson got on base with a single, stole second and then Payton Cummings — who had a game-high five RBIs on the day — brought him in with an RBI for a 1-0 lead. Jaxxon Jensen then stepped into the box and hit a towering solo shot over the left field wall to push the lead to 2-0.

“I was waiting on that pitch,” Jensen said. “I knew they were going to throw me a curveball and I’m glad I made the most of it.”

Grantsville could have added several more runs with the bases loaded, but Carbon was able to get out of the jam to limit the damage.

The Dinos quickly tied things up in the bottom of the inning as Cash Withers got on base with a hit up the middle and then Maddux Willson smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall to tie things up at 2-2.

Carbon then took its largest lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to take a 6-2 lead. After several walks, Jackson Bosone got things going with two RBIs on a single to left field. Then, with runners on the corner, Logan Bennett hit a double to deep center to bring in two more runs and extend the lead. Carbon nearly got another run, but Withers got tagged out at the plate to end the inning.

Carbon looked well on its way to forcing another game in the series, but Grantsville had other plans. The second-seeded Cowboys scored four runs in the fifth and then another four runs in the sixth to take a 10-6 lead into the last inning.

Carbon loaded the bases and had the tying run at the plate, but couldn’t come up with any late inning magic as Jensen struck out Kaeden Sandoval to escape the jam and get the victory.

“There was a lot of pressure, but I had confidence in my team and in myself,” Jensen said. “It was a big relief to get that last out and to know we are moving on to the championship. We worked so hard all year to get to this point, so to win it like that was awesome.”

With the victory, No. 2 Grantsville will face No. 1 Union, which took down No. 3 Canyon View — the reigning champions — in the 3A title game.

Union 10, Canyon View 9

There will be a new champion this year as the top-seeded Union Cougars took down Canyon View to earn a spot in the championship game against Grantsville.

The Cougars, who took down the Falcons 8-1 on Tuesday, followed it up with a 7-4 victory Wednesday night at Lindquist Field to take down the reigning champs.

Wednesday was a more competitive game as the two teams went back and forth.

Canyon View got on the board first as Cannon Williams doubled off the left-field wall. A wild pitch then sent him to third, with Zach Maine bringing him home for the 1-0 lead.

Union rallied in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead as back-to-back walks with the bases loaded brought home Gannon Labrum and Cade Frandsen.

The Falcons tied things up in the top of the second as Jack Merrill got on base with a walk. After stealing second and a base hit put runners on the corner, Williams stepped up to the plate and hit a shot to the shortstop who made a nice grab and threw to second for the force out. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the second baseman dropped the ball to allow Merrill to score and tie the game up.

After a scoreless inning by both teams, Union broke the game open with a five-run third thanks to a bunt by Brennen Mecham, which scored two runs and got him to second after a throwing error at first. Labrum and Davin Brotherson then tacked on RBIs.

Canyon View fought back with two runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to pull within a run at 7-6. Union then added two more runs and looked to have the game won, but the Falcons scored 3 runs in the seventh to tie the score.

In the bottom of the seventh and with one out, Labrum got the momentum going with a base hit to left. Frandsen then followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corner. With one out, Tyson Marx stepped up and drilled a deep shot to left field for the walk-off sacrifice fly to give Union a 10-9 win.
