The New York Yankees shortstop didn't exactly earn his roster spot back. The Yankees placed Jose Caballero on the 10-day injured list with a fractured middle finger on Tuesday.

Volpe went 15-for-68 with a home run and a .570 OPS in 18 games split between Double-A and Triple-A before his call-up.

He will bat eighth and play shortstop in today's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles

However, the amount of time Volpe stays in the Majors will be determined shortly after Caballero returns from the IL. It could be as short as 10 days.

On Tuesday, manager Aaron Boone told reporters, including The Athletic's Chris Kirschner, that he anticipates that Caballero will be the Yankees' starting shortstop when his 10 days are finished.

After a difficult 2025 season in which the partially torn labrum may have been a factor in Volpe's struggles at the plate and in the field, he has a lot to prove.

The Yankees were protective and extra confident in the 25-year-old in recent seasons. At the moment, his future with the AL East club is blurry.
