Assam election results: BJP leads in early trends

The counting of votes in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections was underway on Monday.

As of 8.20 am, the Bharatiya Janata Party was leading in 15 seats and the Congress in one in early trends, reports and data from the Election Commission showed. The counting began at 8 am.

The All India United Democratic Front was leading in two seats.

Polling was held on April 9.

A party of an alliance needs 64 seats in the 126-member Assembly for a majority.

Several exit polls have predicted that the BJP would win the elections.

In 2021, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance retained power with 75 seats. While Sarbananda Sonowal was the chief minister during the National Democratic Alliance’s first term between 2016 and 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma had taken over the position after the election.

The voter turnout in Assam was 85.9%, the highest ever in the state. In the 2021 polls, the state had recorded a turnout of 82%.
