It's the final countdown toward the impending NFL draft on Thursday night and teams are scrambling through the final minutes of getting their big boards ready.
When it comes to the Houston Texans, they will have a big decision to make with the 28th overall pick. Depending on how the board falls, Houston could go several directions at multiple positions. The Texans could also pull off the Nick Caserio special and trade away the pick for extra compensation on Day 2.

Following a prominent free agency, three names rank above all else in Houston. The defensive line, offensive tackle and interior offensive line are all needs that must be addressed heading into the draft. But Caserio has stated for years that the Texans won't go for need and will instead attack the draft with a best-player-available approach.
So, when looking at the 28th pick, who would be the ideal selection if Houston stands pat?
Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski identified an ideal pick for every team in the first round of the draft. While the offensive line must be addressed on Day 2, it's no surprise that Houston's defensive background came into full swing behind DeMeco Ryans, thus netting the franchise Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, who is arguably the most-mocked player to the Texans down the stretch.
"Ohio State's Kayden McDonald is the Bleacher Report Scouting Department's highest-rated defensive tackle," Sobleski wrote. "He's also a true nose tackle. He served as the tip of the spear for the Buckeyes' loaded defense during the 2025 campaign.
He can do the same in Houston. A talented widebody capable of resetting the line of scrimmage, making stops in the backfield and collapsing the pocket on occasion will only make Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter even more effective."
Already viewed as a fan favorite to land in Houston, McDonald has to visit Reliant Stadium since the NFL combine for a top-30 visit. He also met with the Texans for a formal interview at the combine and followed up with the staff at Ohio State's Pro Day late last month.
A native of Texarkana who later moved to Georgia, McDonald might not fit the typical mold of what DeMeco Ryans has historically searched for in defensive tackles, but perhaps that's promising since variety could only bolster the defensive front. More than anything, the Texans need productive players. Enter McDonald, who was the anchor to one of college football's best run defenses last season under longtime NFL defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
The Texans need a long-term running mate up the middle to pair with the recently extended Anderson. Even though he's not the ideal fit for Ryans' defense as a three-tech, the Texans have needed a difference-maker in the run game with 1-tech potential, so perhaps the switch is a welcome addition beyond 2026.
