The Chicago Cubs suffered a huge setback with the news of Cade Horton being out for the year with Tommy John surgery. With that in mind, they’ll need someone to fill his place in the rotation; the guy doesn’t have to be an ace, just a qualified starting pitcher.

Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Shea proposes the Mets buy low and trade for Mets All-Star Kodai Senga. Senga has had a pretty bad start to the season, but has shown flashes of greatness in the past, and a change of scenery could help him.

The trade would look like this:

Cubs get: RHP Kodai Senga

Mets get: CHC No. 5 prospect OF Kane Kepley, CHC No. 17 prospect RHP Jostin Florentino

“The Cubs would consider acquiring Kodai Senga because they are sitting at 9–9 and currently last in the NL Central, and their biggest short-term weakness is a lack of reliable rotation depth with true upside. From their perspective, adding Senga is a calculated gamble on talent and ceiling rather than current performance, since he still offers the kind of swing-and-miss ability and frontline potential that their rotation is missing. If he stabilizes, he could immediately step in as a high-end starter who lengthens the rotation and raises the team’s ceiling in a division race that is still very open,” Shea wrote.

So far this season, Senga has posted a 0-2 record, a 7.07 ERA, 19 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.714 over 14 innings pitched. However, his advanced stats show much more promise, with his FIP only being a 3.81, meaning his team’s defense has been a major factor in his starts.

A fresh start in Chicago could be just what Senga needs. He’d have a secured spot in the rotation, and he’d join fellow Japanese stars in Shota Imanaga and Seiya Suzuki. Hopefully, the Cubs find a way to make this work, and get on it.
