Riley Greene is doing something the Detroit Tigers haven't seen in 16 years.

The 25-year-old reached base for the 15th straight game to open the 2026 season, marking the longest streak by a Tiger since Brandon Inge reached safely in the first 24 games of 2009.

Greene drove in one run with a single in the first inning then delivered a three-run home run in the third inning to power a 6-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday, April 11, in the second of three games in the series at Comerica Park.

It was his first homer of the season.

The Tigers (6-9) have a chance to sweep the Marlins (8-7) on Sunday (1:40 p.m., Detroit SportsNet) in a pitching duel between left-hander Tarik Skubal (the 2024 and 2025 American League Cy Young winner) and right-hander Sandy Alcantara (the 2022 National League Cy Young winner).

In Saturday's game, Greene fueled the Tigers – but right-hander Casey Mize put them on the path to the finish line.

Mize delivered a bounce-back performance, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts across 5⅔ innings. He guided the Tigers into the sixth inning with his 74-pitch effort.

The Marlins' only run scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Mize avoided damage despite traffic in the first inning (two-out single), second inning (leadoff double), third inning (leadoff single) and fifth inning (leadoff walk).

His composure in the second and third innings defined his successful start.

A leadoff double from Otto Lopez in the second deflected off the glove of left fielder Kerry Carpenter. The mistake from Carpenter didn't rattle Mize, who sent down the next three batters. The leadoff single from Heriberto Hernández in the third was bobbled by second baseman Zach McKinstry. It should've been an out, but once again, Mize didn't flinch as he sent down the next three batters.

Mize owns a 3.94 ERA across 16 innings in three starts.

As Mize thrived, the Tigers turned on the offense to support him with two runs in the first inning against right-hander Janson Junk.

It all started with Kevin McGonigle's leadoff double.

That and Colt Keith put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. For the two hits, McGonigle pulled a middle-middle fastball into the right-center gap and Keith pushed an elevated fastball into left field.

Greene made it a 2-0 lead, pulling Junk's up-and-in changeup into left field for a two-out single.

Just like that, he increased his on-base streak to 15 games.

The big swing came in the third inning.

The Tigers had McGonigle (walk) and Dillon Dingler (catcher interference) in scoring position with two outs for Greene, who fouled five pitches during a 10-pitch battle with Junk.

Finally, Greene unloaded for his first home run.

He unloaded on an up-and-in 94.3 mph fastball for a three-run homer to right-center field, hitting the ball 408 feet with a 106.9 mph exit velocity. His swing put the Tigers ahead, 5-0.

Greene – who hit 36 homers last season – finished 2-for-3 with one single, one home run and one walk across four plate appearances, driving in four of the six runs.

He is hitting .228 with a .674 OPS through 15 games.

Protecting a 5-1 lead, the Tigers turned to right-handed reliever Drew Anderson to replace Mize with two runners in scoring position – the result of Lopez reaching on an uncharacteristic throwing error by McGonigle and Connor Norby hitting a ground-rule double down the right-field line that a sliding Wenceel Pérez couldn't catch.

Anderson answered the call.

He stranded the runners by getting Graham Pauley to bounce into an inning-ending groundout.

In the eighth, Spencer Torkelson made it a 6-1 advantage with a single to score Greene (who drew an eight-pitch walk) against right-handed reliever Anthony Bedner.

Anderson covered the final 3⅓ innings for the Tigers.

He threw 61 pitches, including 14 to the final batter of the game, Jakob Marsee, an Allen Park and Central Michigan alumnus.
