New York Giants center John Michael Schmitz recently linked up with retired NFL veteran A.Q. Shipley for a workout session focused on refining technique in the shotgun formation.
In the video posted by Shipley, the pair can be seen drilling blocking schemes against nose tackles, a critical element in today's pass-heavy NFL offenses where shotgun snaps have become standard.

Shipley, a 12-year NFL center who earned a Super Bowl ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, brings extensive experience from stints with multiple teams, including the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens. Now retired, the former Penn State standout has transitioned into mentoring roles, emphasizing both the physical and mental demands of playing center at the professional level.
Schmitz, selected by the Giants in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft, has started at center since his rookie year but faced early criticism for inconsistent play. His performance showed progress toward league-average levels in 2025 before a finger/hand injury ended his season.
The session highlights Shipley's guidance on proper hand placement, leverage, and adjustments needed to handle interior pressure in modern schemes.
Shipley promoted the workout under his "Shipyard" training banner, stressing the vital mental tools required alongside athletic ability.
