The Philadelphia 76ers received some awful news on Thursday afternoon when big man Joel Embiid was listed as out for Thursday's huge matchup with the Houston Rockets. The big fella was placed on the 1:15 p.m. EDT injury report as out due to illness.

However, it appears that it's something serious. The Sixers announced that Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis and he will undergo surgery in Houston on Thursday afternoon.
In 38 games in 2025-26, Embiid is averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while shooting 48.9% from the floor and 33.3% from deep. His absence is going to make a huge difference for the Sixers down the stretch with so much on the line for them in terms of positioning.

With Embiid out, the Sixers will need Tyrese Maxey and Paul George to truly lead the way for this group. Until they can figure out the next steps for the big fella, the Sixers are going to be counting on others to get the job done. It's just truly unfortunate timing for Embiid at this stage.
