Odisha raises SC, ST quotas, introduces OBC reservation in medical, technical education

The Odisha government on Sunday increased reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and introduced a quota for Other Backward Classes, referred to as Socially and Economically Backward Classes, in medical and technical education, PTI reported.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Majhi said the quota for Scheduled Tribes had been raised to 22.5%, from 12% while that for Scheduled Castes had been increased to 16.25% from 8%.

An 11.25% reservation has also been introduced for Socially and Economically Backward Classes, who previously had no quota in these courses.

The chief minister said the revised system would apply in all universities, affiliated colleges, Industrial Training Institutes and polytechnics, covering fields such as engineering, medicine, management, computer applications and allied disciplines.

It will also apply to undergraduate and postgraduate courses and other programmes notified by the state government.

Explaining the move, Majhi said the Scheduled Tribes population in the state exceeds 22%, but reservation had remained at 12% for a long time.

“Therefore, we have raised it according to their proportion in the population,” PTI quoted Majhi as saying.

He added that Scheduled Castes make up more than 17% of the population but previously had only 8% reservation.
