Even after a slow start to the 2026 season by his lofty standards, he still has a win and three top-five finishes through seven events. Last year, he won six times, including two majors, and is a US Open away from completing the career grand slam.
Physically, he’s the best ball striker in the game, with an ability to shape his irons effortlessly and deliver whatever shot the course requires in that moment. But there’s more to Scheffler’s greatness than his physical attributes.
What sets Scheffler apart from the rest of the golfing world is his mentality. He possesses a calm composure when he’s firing on all cylinders. When Scheffler is on his game, he seems in a total state of zen.
His caddie, Ted Scott, explained what he’s seen from Scheffler’s mentality that makes him the best player in the world, and revealed what he said to him on their first day working together which helped to get him in that mindset.

Scott, who has won four Green Jackets as a caddie for Bubba Watson and Scottie Scheffler, is one of the greatest loopers of all time. He’s helped Scheffler become the player that he is today, guiding him to an Olympic gold and four major championships.
Speaking on Golf.com’s YouTube channel, he said, “I think the reason why Scottie is the best golfer in the world is because he’s the most humble guy. He’s the most humble guy that’s at that level that I’ve ever met.
“He gives the reins away to people that probably aren’t as adequate as him. But it’s because it’s like, I might learn something. And he doesn’t agree with everything, but he’s like, let’s see what you got.
“Let’s see what you can teach me. That’s a great quality to have, right? So I think there’s definitely parallels in caddying and in life that we all should be trying to learn from somebody and we should all be trying to teach somebody.”
Speak to anyone who knows him, and it’s clear that Scheffler is remarkably down to earth for someone of his stature in the golfing world. But Scott deserves some credit for that too.
What Ted Scott said to Scottie Scheffler on their first day working together
On his first day on the job as Scheffler’s caddie in 2021, Scott laid down the law with him immediately. He set about getting the world number one into the correct mindset.
Scott said, “Ultimately, the one thing that I did for Scottie that he didn’t have was the very first day that we worked together.
“I just basically checked him on his attitude, and he said, ‘Hey, I’m not going to do this if you don’t have a good attitude.’
“And so that accountability, that boundary, kind of made him keep a good attitude on the course. And look, everybody’s better in life with a good attitude. So there’s no secret to that, right? Anybody could have done that.
“I think that’s the one thing that I spoke to him and said, hey, I’m going to hold you accountable to that.’”
Scheffler’s demeanour on the golf course, when he’s playing well at least, reflects that. And while he’s shown some frustration of late, that’s where having Scott on the bag is of a huge benefit to him.
He’ll keep Scheffler on an even keel until he recaptures his form, and starts winning at an immense rate once again.
