Cape Town waste, recycling removals continue over Easter

· The South African

The Easter season is in full swing in South Africa this week, and with it comes several public holidays.

This means that many businesses will be closed and some public services will be paused until next week.

Fortunately for Capetonians, they don’t have to stress about their weekly waste and recycling removals being put on hold.

WASTE SERVICES DURING EASTER PERIOD

According to the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate, waste and recycling collection (for areas that receive the latter service) will proceed as usual during the upcoming public holidays.

These include Good Friday (3 April 2026) and Easter Monday (6 April 2026).

“Residents are encouraged to ensure all bins are placed out for servicing as early as possible, as reduced peak traffic over this period means crews travel quickly on their routes,” per a City statement.

“Residents should also leave bins out until 21:00 each night to ensure collection, as the Easter period carries a higher risk of unplanned disruptions and delays. If the bin is not emptied on the scheduled day, please bring it out again each day until it is emptied. Report uncollected bins after 48 hours.”

NOTE ON COMMUNITY RECYCLING CENTRES

Cape Town residents should note that community recycling facilities/drop-off sites will operate according to Saturday/public holiday hours during these two days.

Furthermore, these facilities/sites will operate to normal Sunday hours on Easter Sunday.

If you need to dispose of garden greens, you are reminded that this is currently restricted to the Coastal Park landfill in Muizenberg for commercial customers. Plus, residential customers should be aware that disposal of garden greens is restricted to one load per day.

CONTACT THE CITY

Do you have any queries or concerns related to waste collection issues? Then you are strongly encouraged to contact the City via one or more of their following channels:

While it’s clear that business will continue as usual for waste collection, holidays such as Easter can occasionally cause delays.

With that being said, you’re strongly urged to be patient if your bin hasn’t been emptied yet. Try to only contact the relevant authorities if you encounter any serious issues.
