President Trump feels ‘badly’ after Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest in Florida

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump appeared upset as he addressed the arrest of his longtime pal, Tiger Woods, who was briefly jailed following a rollover crash in Florida, but defended the golf champ, calling him “an amazing person.”

“He’s got some difficulty. There was an accident, and that’s all I know,” Trump told reporters after arriving in Miami Friday evening. “Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person. Amazing man. But some difficulty.”

The president then added, curtly: “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Trump has for decades enjoyed a close relationship with the 15-time major champ. In May 2019, during his first term in office, Trump presented Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Woods is also currently dating the president’s former daughter-in-law, Vanessa Trump, who was previously married to Donald Trump Jr.

“We’ve played golf together. We’ve had dinner together,” Woods said of his friendship with Trump in a 2018 interview. “I’ve known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency.”

The crash occurred on Friday around 2 p.m. not far from where Woods lives in Jupiter Island, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said in a press conference Friday.

The golf superstar was apparently attempting to a pass a pressure cleaner truck at the time, eventually swerving in a bid to avoid a collision. He was unsuccessful however, and his vehicle clipped the back end of the truck’s trailer, Budensiek said.

Woods’ car then rolled onto its driver’s side and he crawled out.

Police later said Woods showed signs of impairment on the scene. While he passed a breathalyzer test, he was still charged with DUI after refusing to take a urine test, which carries an additional charge. Authorities suspect the “lethargic” golfer was under the influence of medication.

No drugs or alcohol were found in his vehicle.

Woods was taken into custody, and he was released on bail late Friday night, hours after the crash.

He is facing charges that include DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test after declining a urine test.
