The Englishman has been in fine form over the past few weeks.
Fitzpatrick earned a runner-up finish at The Players Championship last Sunday, and he has been in complete control of his golf ball at the Valspar Championship this week.
That said, Fitzpatrick has lamented some bad luck he’s been dealt at the Valspar throughout the tournament.
The 31-year-old knows what it takes to win big tournaments on tough golf courses, so he was always going to be in the mix at the Copperhead Course this week.
Matt Fitzpatrick complained about playing partner’s behavior at the Valspar
Fitzpatrick was paired alongside Adrien Dumont de Chassart during the final round of the Valspar on Sunday.
The 26-year-old Belgian endured all sorts of problems throughout the day, and was three-over-par for his round at the time of writing.
However, it seems like he was causing Fitzpatrick all sorts of problems as well.
Photo by Sam Navarro/Getty ImagesOn-course commentator John Wood revealed why a ‘perturbed’ Fitzpatrick was unhappy with Dumont de Chassart.
“He is a little perturbed with his playing partner’s pace of play. It is glacial, to be kind,” Wood said.
He then elaborated on just how impatient Fitzpatrick was.
“He hit his approach on the 11th first, even though he was closer, and walked up to the green, where he waited about 3 min before Dumont de Chassart hit his approach,“ Wood said.
What rules official said about Matt Fitzpatrick’s complaint
Rules official Orlando Pope said that Fitzpatrick had spoken with an official about the Belgian’s pace of play.
The PGA Tour rules official they chose to give Dumont de Chassart an official warning after timing him.
Whatever the end result turns out to be for the Belgian, it’s simply unacceptable to play so slowly when you’re paired with someone who’s in contention to win.
Players like Dumont de Chassart need to be given more severe punishments otherwise slow play will never be eradicated from the game.
Fitzpatrick is a really quick player, so he must have been hugely frustrated with Dumont de Chassart during the final round at the Valspar Championship.
Something has to change soon and the onus is on the PGA Tour to make that happen.
