Mets Receive Promising NL Pennant Prediction

· Yahoo Sports

The New York Mets underwent a brutal collapse last season to miss the playoffs.

Then, changes came in the offseason. Manager Carlos Mendoza was brought back for another year, but Pete Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles and Edwin Diaz inked a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers

The Mets made some trades, sending Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil away, but they did add Marcus Semien.

Then, the big one came: The Mets acquired pitcher Freddy Peralta in a big trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. And, the Mets signed Toronto Blue Jays star Bo Bichette, although they have surprisingly decided to use him at third base, which is a new position.

The Mets named Peralta as the Opening Day starter, which was expected, and the hope is that he can sign a long-term deal to stay in Queens for the foreseeable future.

So, yes, there are plenty of changes, but Eno Sarris of The Athletic had a bold prediction for the Mets: Winning the National League pennant.

Sarris made the prediction based on the pitching depth, and the starting rotation is one of the best and deepest in baseball.

Here is the projected rotation from MLB.com:

1. Freddy Peralta, RHP

2. Nolan McLean, RHP

3. Clay Holmes, RHP

4. David Peterson, LHP5. Sean Manaea, LHP

6. Kodai Senga, RHP

That is a solid group, and Brandon Sproat was part of the Peralta trade, and Jonah Tong was sent down to the minor leagues, ruling him out of making the Opening Day rotation.

The Mets have other depth options just in case an injury takes place, which is likely given the 162-game season.

New York also has Tobias Myers, Christian Scott and Jonathan Pintaro as depth pieces, so Mendoza has even more options in the long run.

Now, the big question is whether or not the Mets can defeat the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers and their loaded rotation.

And, the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies figure to be contenders in the National League East again, so the Mets have plenty of obstacles ahead of them.

Last summer, the Mets looked to be the favorites to win the NL East before everything unraveled, and the pressure should be at an all-time high for Mendoza and the front office to get things done this time.

After all, they invested a lot of money, and the time to win is now for the Mets.
