But the defeat hasn’t dampened any of the buzz around Fonseca. If anything, it’s added more weight to what people were already saying about him before they met.
Alcaraz spoke about Fonseca’s performance after their meeting, giving his thoughts on how the Brazilian played.

Now, in less than two weeks, he’s faced both.
When asked about the value of those experiences for the 19-year-old, Alcaraz reflected: “Well, I do remember when I played Rafa Nadal for the first time in Madrid. I remember how good that match was for me. Even though I was destroyed.”
“I would say for him playing toe to toe with us, he’s gonna get great feedback from his team. They’re gonna know what he should improve in the future.”
“He has everything. Great shots. A lot of things to improve. But I’m pretty sure he’s gonna do it. Back-to-back tournaments playing against number one and number two in the world is gonna be really helpful for him.”
Fonseca finally gets his shot against Alcaraz and Sinner
Fonseca’s growing reputation made this one of the most anticipated matchups on the schedule, especially with so much support for him in Miami.
His meeting with Sinner at Indian Wells had come just days earlier, where he pushed the Italian to two tiebreaks before eventually losing both.
In Miami, Alcaraz came out on top 6-4, 6-4. Even so, it was another good learning experience for Fonseca at this stage of his career.
The teenager has all the potential in the world but breaking through against Alcaraz and Sinner won’t be easy. The pair have taken a firm grip on men’s tennis in recent years.
But across these two matches, Fonseca has shown he’s not far off their level – and there’s every reason to believe he’ll close that gap even further as he gains more experience.
