The popular anchor and sports director for Detroit's ABC affiliate announced Friday, March 20, on social media that he is leaving the station May 1.
Galli said it was his decision and thanked WXYZ's leadership for "for treating me with kindness, listening, and, ultimately, understanding."
As for what's next, Galli was upbeat and mysterious. "I'm excited to work more independently in this new chapter, sharing my work in new places that allow me to be around more often at night with my wife and kids," he shared on Facebook.
Galli's evening schedule is crowded at 7 News Detroit, where he is part of the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. news team. He also does the 10 p.m. newscast on WMYD-TV (Channel 20).
The Detroit native is a two-time Emmy winner and a three-time honoree as Michigan Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. He has covered athletes and managers in nearly every sport in professional and amateur realms.
When he isn't handling his sports duties, Galli pitches in by interviewing entertainment and pop culture stars during promotional visits to Detroit and at events like Motor City Comic Con. He has extensively covered "Ted Lasso" and its cast members, once donning a fake Ted Lasso mustache for a story about the beloved comedy starring Jason Sudeikis.
Galli, an alum of Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills and Marquette University in Milwaukee, said in his announcement: "I grew up in a home that watched Channel 7, and I'm beyond thankful that I got to work at the station for 15 years."
Galli joined WXYZ in 2011. Just four years later, he became a sports anchor at the station after his predecessor, Tom Leyden, left to take a job in Boston.
"My time with the talented, hard-working people at WXYZ has left an incredible, unforgettable mark on me," Galli wrote, noting that "our family will always be a Channel 7 family."
