Kevin Gausman is only 35 years old, but could be entering the later stages of his career. However, while Gausman might only have a few years left, at most, the veteran right-hander said that he’s not ready to close the door on his future with the Toronto Blue Jays just yet.
Amid some conversations about retirement, Gausman understands that Toronto needs to make a decision soon.
“That is something we haven’t really crossed that bridge yet,” Gausman said on ‘Foul Territory.’
“But, yeah, I would love to continue playing for the Blue Jays. I love this organization. I love this city. For me, being here for as long as I have, it’s been cool to see the organization grow, see Skip (John Schneider) grow as a manager. There are a lot of things. My kids have grown up in Toronto. There are a lot of things to like when you are looking from the outside looking in, where you would want to play.”
As the Blue Jays continue to navigate a competitive AL East, there’s not much of a reason to move on from Gausman at all. He’s a free agent at the end of the campaign, but if he continues to throw the baseball at the level he has, posting a 3.59 ERA last season, bringing him back on a cheaper deal makes too much sense.
Regardless, Gauman and the Blue Jays will have a chance to win this year, and that’s what matters for now.
