Fernandes was pivotal to the Reds completing their turnaround following Maxence Lacroix’s fourth-minute opener, as his converted spot-kick levelled the contest with just over half an hour left to play.
Credit must also be given to Matheus Cunha, who won the penalty with his run into the box, which resulted in Lacroix being sent off.
When Fernandes found the back of the net past his former teammate Dean Henderson, he revealed that the pair had words over his effort.
“I worked with him. I was with him when he had the spell at [Nottingham] Forest,” United’s No.8 said of Henderson, as quoted by UtdDistrict.
“He even told me at the end that he wanted to go to the same side as he did last week [vs Wolverhampton Wanderers] and save it. Lucky for me, he went to the other side.”

Nonetheless, Fernandes’ contribution and Palace’s dismissal paved the way for Carrick’s men to really push on for a winner in the closing stages of the clash – and it took only eight minutes for them to do so.
An inch-perfect ball into the area from Fernandes was met by Benjamin Sesko, who was able to head it home and secure his seventh goal in his last eight appearances across all competitions.
The result confirmed that United would end matchweek 28 in third place.
