Dominik Szoboszlai showed his best and worst against Manchester City on Sunday, and his straight red means he will be unavailable due to suspension for Liverpool’s challenging midweek fixture against a Sunderland side who have shown themselves worth staying up this season.

Jeremie frimpong and Conor Bradley are absent with injury, and Joe Gomez is unlikely to be available for Arne Slot’s side on Wednesday — though the Liverpool boss has not completely ruled the Englishman out. Of course, should Gomez be available he would be returning after three weeks out of action, its own uncertainty.

Curtis Jones has played as a makeshift right back before, as has Wataru Endō; both midfielders are available for Wednesday.

Calvin Ramsay, a natural right back, is fit and available and could start on Wednesday, but thus far Slot has not shown faith in the levels of the young Scottish defender. Should Slot want to make outlandish decisions, he could ask one of his left backs to play on the other side, but that seems a bridge too far.

Regardless, Slot is left with yet another selection headache in what has been a challenging position.
