Donald Trump says the launch of a new prescription drug website will help Americans without health insurance purchase medications at a discount.

The U.S. President unveiled the website TrumpRX on Thursday, which lists many common medications including fertility and weight loss drugs.

“This is a very big deal,” Trump said at the White House event . “People are going to save a lot of money and be healthy.”

The discounts are due to Trump’s threats of pharma tariffs after the President targeted drug manufacturers with high prescription prices. The website only contains medications from companies that have agreed to Most Favored Nation pricing following months of negotiations.

“For years, politicians from both parties have promised to bring down prescription drug prices and make health care more affordable,” Trump said. “But they all failed.”

Price comparisons

The website shows comparisons between U.S. prices and the cost of the same drug in Canada. For the Gonal-F fertility injection, the current list price is US$1,449 while in Canada it costs US$355.

“One in three families is having trouble having a baby,” Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said.

“We’re gonna have a lot of Trump babies with these costs, folks cannot afford these medications. It’s gonna change their lives.”

Redeem coupons

However, what the website doesn’t do is sell prescription drugs. People who sign up are given coupons to redeem at pharmacies or manufacturer websites , with the exception of certain specialty drugs.

In other cases, the website links to the medication at the company’s website.

In addition, anyone who is enrolled in government, state, or federally-funded medical or prescription insurance coverage do not qualify for the coupons.

“At this time, TrumpRx discounted pricing is only available for cash-paying patients,” the website’s FAQ explains.

At the time of the launch, there are 43 medications available on the website with more promised sometime in the future.

“It’s nice that they are aggregating coupons in one place,” Benjamin Jolley, a senior fellow for health care at the American Economic Liberties Project, told ABC News .

“But it’s a convenience to check the website to see the coupons all in one place for the first time.

Many companies involved

Pharmaceutical companies appearing on TrumpRX include Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Gilead, GSK, Merck, Novartis, Sanofi, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk.

Pfizer is the largest participant in Trump RX with more than 30 medications listed.
